Zhang will perform some similar moves, but will often double up, requiring multiple deflects in a row that have altered timing. This phase is all about patience and attrition, even more so than the first phase. You’ll always have a brief moment of respite to heal as the second phase begins, as Zhang will always start with a sweep of his demonic arm that will never have the range to hit you from your starting position. Denoted with the red glow, the only barrier to this tactic is timing, which will come with studying attacks, and likely multiple deaths and attempts. In both phases, as with many of the coming boss fights in the game, your ace in the hole is deflecting any and all Critical Blow attacks that an enemy performs. As usual, keep your lock-on engaged on Liang as he does so, and don't get trigger happy with the deflect button wait until the last moment as he slams down. Liang will occasionally launch into the air with his club, which will cause him to hang in the air for a second or two before slamming down. Every little bit of damage counts!Īfter each of his attacks (should you successfully deflect) you’ll have a brief window in which you can perform a Normal, Normal, Spirit attack combo that can keep him stunlocked for brief periods of time, and if it is rapidly repeated you can whittle his health down quickly. Whilst the spells aren’t super effective, the brief moments of distance you can gain from Zhang in this first phase will allow you to cast a couple of spells. If you haven’t already unlocked and assigned any Wizardry Spells, it’s worth doing so at the Battle Flag if you die and need another attempt at defeating Zhang. If you want a couple of free hits, immediately sprint towards him at the beginning of the fight as he slams down his mace/club weapon, and even use a Martial Arts attack if you’re feeling confident. If you get caught by it, this is one of the deadliest attacks in his arsenal.Whilst Zhang will by far be the most agile and aggressive opponent you have faced thus far, his first phase shouldn’t prove too much trouble so long as you have a good grasp of the Deflect mechanic. More often than not, the speed of his spins will allow you to consistently deflect the blade. In order to prevent damage, deflect just as he lunges forward (which will be after a couple of seconds), or dodge multiple times to either side to just miss the lunge.Ī second Critical Blow attack is where Zhang Liao launches into the air, and performs a number of spins down to you. The second kick comes right after the other, so be sure to deflect twice in immediate succession to not take heavy damage and likely become staggered.Ī Critical Blow attack that Zhang Liao can perform is a forward lunge with his sword, denoted by the usual red glow and Liao pulling his sword back towards his right side. Zhang Liao can also perform two consecutive kicks, spinning in the air to launch into the kick. The charge up animation to this attack is similarly long, with a rapid execution, so be on the look out for Zhang Liao holding his sword horizontally down, as what looks like wind lines rush in towards his sword. He can also charge his sword and perform a charging horizontal swipe, which must be deflected at the last moment as Zhang Liao lunges towards you. In order to deflect them all, you'll essentially need to rapidly and consecutively spam the deflect button until the combo is over, but even if your timing is slightly off and you get caught by one or two of the slashes, it shouldn't deal enough damage to be fatal. His most common combo is a number of fast slashes, culminating in a series of rapid aerial spins, slashing diagonally down towards you. The sword becomes larger and fully charged and illuminated with electricity, and the hang in the air lasts for a few seconds so you have time to dodge backwards, or to prepare a deflection as he slams the sword down. With the magically imbued weapon, Zhang Liao can launch into the air and perform a vertical slash down with his sword. If the effect wears off, Zhang Liao will reactivate it, causing bolts of lightning to shoot down in a circular AOE around him. Zhang Liao is an incredibly aggressive warrior, utilising his Divine Beast to continually imbue his weapon with electricity.
